Forest Schools - Session 1
What a fantastic (and very mucky!) first session we had!
We began by going over our Forest Schools rules and setting clear boundaries so everyone understood how to stay safe while exploring the outdoor area. Forest Schools gives us freedom — but with responsibility.
Our first activity focused on camouflage. The children were divided into two groups — Birds and Worms.
The Worms were given red and green yarn to hide carefully around the forest area, thinking about which colours would blend in best. The Birds then searched for them.
Through this, the children explored:
-
Why camouflage is important for survival
-
How animals adapt to their environments
-
Observation skills and strategy
During our exploration time, we were excited to discover a ladybird, a beetle and even a real worm! The children handled the moment with curiosity and fascination, taking time to observe the creatures closely and talk about their habitats.
After break, we worked in small groups using bamboo sticks to build simple frame structures. Each group then collected natural materials such as leaves, sticks and moss to create beautiful pieces of tree art. The teamwork, creativity and resilience shown was lovely to see.
It was muddy, energetic, hands-on learning at its best — and yes… very muddy indeed!
